The main focus for Chinese investors in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is in the mining sector, especially in the southeastern region of Katanga. The DRC has immense cobalt and copper reserves, and China is especially interested in cobalt because the mineral is used in cell phone production. Chinese companies own many mines and factories in Katanga, and have built infrastructure to help develop the mining industry. These projects include dams to provide mines with power, roads to transport capital and minerals from Katanga to Kinshasa, and a fiber optic system to provide internet to businesses in the DRC. In the past, China has also built several major buildings in the capital of Kinshasa. These include government offices, a hospital, and the national football stadium of the DRC.
