Nigeria has a long history with oil and is one of the largest suppliers in the world. The West has long dominated the extraction, funding, and transportation of Nigeria’s oil, but this is starting to change. Recently, China has started to expand into the Nigerian oil market and has been trying to fund infrastructure in Nigeria to sway the government. However, with the maturity of the Nigerian oil industry and the domination of Western companies, this is easier said than done. China is investing in infrastructure projects like the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano pipeline and spending $16 billion in Nigerian oil in the hopes of shaking western dominance. China needs more oil and natural gas to fuel its growing energy demands and hopes Nigeria can help with the supply. The purpose of this map is to show Chinese efforts to expand its reach into Nigerian oil while also showing the dominance of companies like Shell and Exxon-Mobil.
