In 1971, China became Sierra Leone’s largest source of aid. The Chinese have helped Sierra Leone in a lot of projects including financing two stadia in the capital, Freetown, and building two major bridges. More than construction, however, agriculture has been a major area of interest for the Chinese government in Sierra Leone. In 1996, China committed $94 million in assistance to Sierra Leone agricultural projects. These projects include building 13 agricultural stations, a sugar plantation, and a hydropower dam in Sierra Leone. Moreover, Chinese companies have also established joint ventures in farming, palm oil, and cattle raising projects across the country. Furthermore, China has also been involved in a series of agreements with Sierra Leone to improve food security in the country such as the agreement with the United Nations Food and Agriculture organization.
