This map shows some of the Chinese investments into Sudan that have been made, with a focus in the oil industry. Sudan’s oil industry plays an important role in the diplomatic relationship between China and Sudan. This is a more recent development in this relationship. Oil exports make up a large portion of Sudan’s trade with China, ultimately making Sudan a net exporter to China.
The increasingly important oil producing regions in Sudan are located near its border with newly formed South Sudan. This has strained China’s relationship with Sudan, as China has sought to maintain a “strictly business” relationship with both Sudan and South Sudan, to Sudan’s displeasure. There is speculation that much of the recent investment into Sudan, consisting mostly of power plants and other infrastructure projects, is a way to improve the relationship after the perceived sleights.
