The Philippines, while only directly occupied by Japan for 3 years during the period between the bombing of pearl harbor and the surrender of Japan, have been immensely influenced economically by trade with Japan as well as implementation of Japanese business in the Philippines. The main industries fueling the Philippines economy are semiconductor and data processing equipment manufacturing. Most of these companies are centralized in Metro Manila and the surrounding area on the island of Luzon. These companies that have factories in Luzon are from all around the world, including Japan, as some of the largest semiconductor and data processing equipment companies operating in the Philippines are based in Japan. Aspects such as the Pan-Philippine highway and recourse mining, not only facilitate the growth of these specific industries, but also the economy of the Philippines as a whole.
