The Kowloon-Canton Railway (1910-2007) was the most important rail network in south China, constructed to facilitate trade between Canton and Hongkong. Its completion in 1910 marked the beginning of the passenger interaction between Canton and Hongkong through the railroad. This map depicted different patterns of passenger travel in three historical periods: in Republic China (1910-1949), passenger service was limited due to chaotic warfare in China; in Mao’s China (1950-1979), people migrated to Hongkong illegally, only on rare occasions such as the Spring Festival did special trains between Canton and Hongkong operate; in Reformed China (1980-2007), passengers could travel easily between Hongkong and Guangzhou (Canton).
