Wine filled the amphoras, bowls, and glasses of the greatest empire of the old world. The harsh climate of Britain left the country unable to produce much wine of its own. British wine merchants prospered as the demand for wine surged in the isles while the supply was scarce. Merchants would soon discover that geography, policy, and import taxes set fluctuating boundaries and limitations on wine imports. Britain began importing less wine from more countries to maintain a stable supply. This project maps the British wine market in 1790 and 1869.
