This map shows the different countries of the Strait of Hormuz and when they joined China’s Belt and Road Initiative with different shades of blue with the darkest being the first to join. In the old Silk Road, the gulf countries did not necessarily have a very strategic geographical location in the land trade routes that were linking the Eastern provinces to the West. However, in today’s world, with the rapidly increasing demand of oil and gas, the strait of Hormuz countries (which have a great portion of the world’s oil reserves) have incredibly strong oil and gas shipping routes towards Eastern countries like China. This map aims to capture the incredible convenience of such routes through the Strait of Hormuz and the Strait of Malacca.
