The map shows two large-scale economic infrastructure construction projects funded by Japan’s Official Development Assistance loans during 1990s, Qinghuangdao Port construction project and Datong – Qinhuangdao Railways construction project. The completion of the two projects enabled a more efficient coal transportation from inland to coastal areas. On one hand, as coal is the major energy used for industrial production in the coastal areas of China, the accelerated coal transportation could boost production activities and promote economic development in coastal cities. On the other hand, the bigger cargo handling capacity of the port also boost exports of China. Additionally, as one of the main importers of Chinese coal, Japan also enjoyed lower cost of coal transportation. Both China and Japan enjoyed economic benefits from the two projects.
