In the 21st Century, Japan has taken a more proactive role in defense cooperation and security relations with US partners. JSDF personnel have been deployed overseas to countries like the Philippines, where they train in military exercises in conjunction with US and Filipino forces. Japan also manufactures defense equipment that is transferred to the Philippines, and in conjunction Filipino military personnel are trained in Japan. The map indicates military exercises that JSDF and Filipino personnel have participated in together as well as the Philippines’ security concern regions, such as the pirates and Islamic insurgents of the Sulu Sea and Moros Islands. This map intends to highlight the security relationship that Japan and the Philippines have and how the two countries cooperate on military matters in contemporary times.
